Established in the 1920's for the "welfare and happiness of the whole community" of Savage, Maryland, this historic landmark hosts social, educational and recreational activities.
Carroll Baldwin Hall was built in 1922-23 to serve as a community center for the mill town of Savage, Maryland in honor of Carroll Baldwin, "beloved Supervisor of Savage Mill" after his death in 1918. It is now a "Maryland Historic Trust" site cared for and maintained by hard working volunteers from the town of Savage.
Over the years, Carroll Baldwin Hall has hosted movie screenings, stage performances, a bowling alley, and public library. It is now functioning for what it was originally designed as, a Community Center for parties, weddings, town meetings and other celebrations and community events, including my son and daughter-in-law's recent wedding.
The structure itself is a Richardsonian Romanesque style building constructed of stone from the nearby Little Patuxent River which was delivered via mule-pulled wagons. After decades of use, the Hall obtained two matching-funds grants for renovation and repair of both the building and the grounds which included a small public park. As part of the fund-raising events, I was asked to paint this painting to be auctioned off to help gain to money to be matched by the grant. I readily agreed, the auction was a big success, and I was very pleased to be a participant in the efforts to renovate this lovely structure.
