I was walking around this wilderness lake when I noticed numerous fallen trees, partially submerged and covered with sunning turtles. This one was of particular interest to me because the turtles appeared to be a mama and daddy having a peaceful and perhaps amorous conversation when the kids suddenly appeared from behind. I do love my children very much but there are times when being alone with my spouse is what I really had in mind!
When I began this painting, I decided that it would be really interesting to lay the groundwork for the horizontal ripples in the water by running oil paint diluted thoroughly with mineral spirits back and forth, side to side across the canvas. The streaks of wet sap green and burnt sienna ran this way and that, random but all in the same general direction simulating the surface of rippling lake water. I then added the log, turtles and reflections, adjusting the values of reflected light as I went.
