Surprising someone with an unexpected gift or good fortune is at least as rewarding to the giver as it is to the receiver. However, as an architect and artist, I have found that in design and painting commissions, surprise is risky. People feel so much more comfortable when kept informed of the progress of a project and when design challenges arise, they understand and accept adjustments. Keeping people apprised of progress also gives them the opportunity to interject their own input which empowers them, despite the inconvenience it may cause the creator. In other situations, knowing that a wonderful thing or event is coming gives a person the opportunity to experience eager anticipation which can bring happiness for days, weeks or even months before an event. I'm not a big fan of surprises, not even good ones. But our ability to adapt to changing circumstance is a real help to whatever surprises bring to our lives.
